使い方

• 名詞では「足で操作する部分」

  pedal は自転車だけでなく、車の brake pedal、gas pedal、clutch pedal や、ピアノの pedal にも使えます。

• 動詞では「自転車をこぐ」

  pedal は動詞として、足でペダルをこぐ動作を表します。目的地を言うときは pedal to school、pedal home のように使えます。

• つづりの違い

  過去形と進行形は、アメリカ英語では pedaled, pedaling が一般的で、イギリス英語では pedalled, pedalling もよく使われます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Step the pedal slowly.

  正: Press the pedal slowly.

  車や機械のペダルを「踏む」は、英語では press the pedal が自然です。step on the pedal も使えますが、step the pedal とは言いません。

• 誤: I rode a pedal to the station.

  正: I pedaled to the station.
