位置や状況を把握する、慣れさせる 新しい場所・仕事・状況で、自分がどこにいるか、何をすべきか分かるようにすること。よく orient oneself や orient someone to ... の形で使います。
関心や方針を〜に向ける 計画・授業・活動などを、ある目的や対象に合うように作る・向けること。be oriented toward ... の形がよく使われます。

orientate も特にイギリス英語で使われますが、orient の方が短く、アメリカ英語では特に一般的です。国際的な文章では orient を使うと無難です。

名詞の the Orient は古い言い方で、ヨーロッパ中心の見方に聞こえることがあります。現代の会話や文章では Asia、East Asia、Southeast Asia など具体的な表現を使う方が自然です。

「〜向けに作られている」は be oriented toward ... が自然です。for も意味は通じる場合がありますが、この表現では toward がよく使われます。

語源
Latin
oriens : 昇るもの、東
Latin の oriens は「昇る」という意味の動詞 oriri から来ており、太陽が昇る方向である「東」を表しました。そこから「東に向ける」「方向を定める」という意味につながりました。
