  あることについて必要な知識や理解がない状態を表します。人に直接使うとかなり失礼に聞こえることがあります。

使い方

• 人に直接使うと強い言い方

  You are ignorant. は「あなたは無知だ」という強い批判に聞こえます。やわらかく言うなら You may not know this. や He is not familiar with the topic. などが自然です。

• ignorant of の形がよく使われる

  「〜を知らない」「〜に気づいていない」は ignorant of something と言います。ignorant about も使われますが、ignorant of は少し硬めでよく見られる形です。

• ignore とは意味が違う

  ignorant は「知らない」、ignore は「知っているのに無視する」という意味です。形が似ていますが、意味は同じではありません。

よくある間違い

• 誤: He is ignorant the rule.

  正: He is ignorant of the rule.

  ignorant の後に名詞を続けるときは、よく of を使います。

• 誤: She ignorant the message.

  正: She ignored the message.

  「メッセージを無視した」と言いたい場合は形容詞 ignorant ではなく、動詞 ignore を使います。

  正: My boss is not familiar with this issue.
