使い方

• for example の使い方

  for example は「例えば」という意味で、文の前・途中・後ろに置けます。書き言葉ではコンマを伴うことが多いです。例: Many fruits are rich in vitamin C, for example, oranges and kiwis.

• example of と example for

  「〜の例」は an example of が基本です。a good example for someone は「人にとってよい手本」という意味で使います。

• sample との違い

  example は説明のための「例」や「手本」。sample は商品・調査・実験などの一部を取り出した「サンプル、見本」という意味が強いです。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Please give me an example for this word.

  正: Please give me an example of this word.

  「この単語の例」は an example of this word が自然です。for は「人にとっての手本」などで使われます。

• 誤: For example dogs and cats are common pets.

  正: For example, dogs and cats are common pets.

  文頭の For example の後には、書き言葉ではコンマを置くのが自然です。

• 誤: He is good example to us.

  正: He is a good example for us.

  example は数えられる名詞なので、単数では a/an が必要です。「私たちにとっての手本」は for us が自然です。
